Connect an AWS Environment
Purpose
The Clumio "Connect AWS Environment" process involves deploying Clumio resources in your AWS account so that Clumio can connect to the selected AWS account/region to perform SecureVault Backup, Snap, and restore tasks. You can connect the Clumio Service to your AWS account using either of the following deployment methods:
- CloudFormation Stack
- Terraform
Prerequisites
Clumio CloudFormation and Terraform templates are designed around the "least privileges" model following standard AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) security guidelines.
Before you connect your AWS environment, verify these permission requirements to ensure the connection process runs smoothly.
Resolution
Connect to an AWS environment using CloudFormation
- Sign in to your AWS account so that Clumio can access it when creating the CloudFormation stack.
- From Clumio, select AWS > Environments. The AWS Environments window appears.
- Click Add Environments with CloudFormation.
- Complete the following fields in the Provide the AWS environment information section:
- AWS Account ID: Enter your 12-digit AWS account ID.
- AWS Region: Select the AWS Region associated with the assets.
- Description: Optionally enter a brief description to help you recognize this account in Clumio. For example, “Payroll”.
- To specify which asset types you want this connection to support, click Customize and select the asset types.
- Click Next. To abort the connection process at any time, click Start Over.
- Under Create CloudFormation stack automatically, click Launch Quick Create Stack wizard and follow the instructions in the AWS Quick create stack screen. The Quick create stack screen automatically populates the fields with the Clumio template and token details needed to create the stack.
- Complete the following fields in the AWS Quick create stack window:
- In the Stack name section, modify the default stack name from “ClumioService” to a meaningful name to help you easily identify the stack in the AWS Management Console.
- In the Capabilities section, click the checkbox to acknowledge the statement, which informs you that the stack creation process includes creating a custom IAM role and IAM policies.
- Click Create stack. AWS creates the resources that will be used by Clumio to perform backups, Snaps, and restores. After the stack has been created, Clumio will try to connect to your AWS account.
- Click the Clumio tab and go to the AWS Environments (AWS > Environments) window to check the connection status. A status of "Connecting..." means that Clumio is trying to connect to your AWS account. Once the connection is fully established, the status changes to "Connected."
To connect to another AWS Region in the same AWS account, repeat the connection steps by connecting to the same account and selecting a different AWS Region.
Connect to an AWS environment using Terraform
- From Clumio, select AWS > Environments. The AWS Environments window appears.
- Click Add Environments with Terraform. This link opens the Clumio Terraform Provider in the Terraform Registry. This page provides instructions on how to use the provider.
