Clumio VPC Removal Update
Intended Audience:
Users of Clumio AWS Protect service deployed prior to August 26, 2021
What is the Clumio VPC removal update?
The Clumio AWS CloudFormation stack previously deployed a VPC and related networking resources in a customer AWS account to meet the backup/restore requirements. This environment footprint often required customers to address Networking and AWS Quota requirements for successful service deployment.
To address these customer pain points, Clumio has pushed the legacy service deployment model towards a completely self-service model to make onboarding hassle-free. The new CloudFormation stack will remove all the VPC and Networking resources from your environment minimizing the footprint required to run Clumio backup/restore jobs in your AWS environment.
The new deployment CloudFormation stack now deploys only the following AWS resources to connect the Clumio service:
- Clumio SNS Topic
- Clumio SNS Topic Policy
- Clumio Event Rules
- Clumio IAM Policies
- Clumio IAM Roles
Following AWS resources will be terminated from your AWS account after the stack update:
- Clumio AutoScalingGroup
- Clumio DynamoDBEndpoint
- Clumio InstancePolicy
- Clumio InstanceRole
- Clumio InternetGateway
- Clumio LaunchTemplate
- Clumio PublicRouteTable
- Clumio S3Endpoint
- Clumio SecurityGroup
- Clumio SubnetLambda
- Clumio VPC
What are the prerequisites to deploy the new Infrastructure-free Clumio stack?
- AWS administrative console to manage the CloudFormation services.
- The Clumio service credentials are used to access the Clumio portal.
How can I deploy the new Infrastructure-free Clumio stack?
Customers can easily upgrade their existing AWS connections with the new Infrastructure-free Clumio stack by updating the existing stack. Go through the steps listed in this KB Article for a step-by-step guide to upgrade the existing AWS connection stack. Each upgrade should only take a few minutes to complete.
Note: The new Infrastructure-free Clumio stack upgrade should only be done when no backup/restore jobs are running. This will ensure that any in-flights backup/restore jobs do not fail.
How will Clumio backup/restore work with the new Infrastructure-free Clumio stack?
Clumio will now use cross-account IAM permissions to leverage GetSnapshotBlock and PutSnapshotBlock APIs to run the backup/restore tasks.
Will there be any changes to my AWS Bill?
The connected AWS account will be charged for the GetSnapshotBlock and PutSnapshotBlock APIs executed in the account to perform the backup/restore tasks. The minimal charges incurred by these APIs are shared below for further reference:
-
GetSnapshotBlock API Charges:
-
$0.003 per thousand SnapshotAPIUnits.
-
For example, 1GB pure data backup charges $0.006 or, 1TB pure data backup charges $6
-
-
PutSnapshotBlock API Charges:
-
$0.006 per thousand SnapshotAPIUnits.
-
For example, 1GB pure data restore charges $0.012 or, 1TB pure data restore charges $12
-
Note: If you use external or cross-region data transfers for Clumio OOR(Out of Region) backups, additional EC2 data transfer charges will apply.
